The Importance Of Nursing Communication In Nursing
Burns et al. (2013) define research problem as ââ¬Å"an area of concern where there is a gap in the knowledge base needed for nursing practiceâ⬠(p. 73). The problem or area of concern, in this study is nursing communication in the ICU. The research problem is explicitly stated in the article. The researchers established the significance of this problem through statements detailing the importance of quality communication. Examples include ââ¬Å"communication is the primary mechanism that health care providers, patients, and patientsââ¬â¢ families use to share information, elicit preferences, convey assessments and plans, and make decisions,â⬠and ââ¬Å"research on nursesââ¬â¢ communication. The study clearly stated that a prospective multiple-case design was use d that allowed for comparison of similarities and differences between the two case studies. Approval for the study was obtained by the institutional review boards at both institutions. An informed consent was completed by all patients. Two hospitals in Oregon is where the study took place were adequate for the study. Six patients with end-stage liver failure along with their families and 54 nurses were selected. The inclusion is that the nurses were eligible on the bases of that they were the nurses that cared for the patients selected and their families. There were a total of 55 nurses that were eligible that included nurses from the day and night shift, but one declined to participate. Of the 54 nurses that were eligible 33 of them were asked for an interview, but the study did not state how they were selected for the interview. The data was obtained through interviews, direct observation of interactions in the ICU, during family conferences, and by observing informal conversations between the patientsââ¬â¢ family members and health care providers, which enhanced the validity of the study.
